Alaska Auto Dealer License Guide
Understanding how to get a car dealer license in Alaska is simpler than most states. The entire auto dealer license process is handled by the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles and requires only four basic steps. In short, simply contact them to get an application package, follow the instructions, get a surety bond, and you’re all set to receive your dealership license and open for business. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

Request an Application and Information Packet
The DMV will provide you with a comprehensive license application and information packet in person or by mail. If you decide to request your packet by mail, be sure to include your name and mailing address.

Obtain Your Auto Dealer Bond
The cost of an auto dealer bond is a small percentage of the total bond amount. The bond cost varies depending on your financial strength, e.g. personal credit. You can also take a look at our most frequently asked surety bond questions.
- Fill out our online application form to obtain a free bond quote for your auto dealer license. It takes 5 minutes and you will be able to lock your rate for the next 90 days (in case you want to purchase the bond).
You’ll need to submit a notarized surety bond to the DMV along with your application.
Bond Amount Required:
- $50,000 if you sell motor vehicles
- $25,000 if you sell motorcycles only
Note: You don’t need a bond if you are a boat dealer.
Meet Additional Requirements
Depending on your location, you may be required to obtain a business license and/or other state licensing. You may also need proof of insurance and an approval of the business site. You can contact your local DMV for more information.

Submit Your Dealer License Application
Complete and submit your application to the DMV (same address as above). Don’t forget to attach your bond and other supporting documentation. The signature of the person signing the application must be notarized.
