Wyoming Contractor License Guide
In the state of Wyoming all contractors, except electrical contractors, are licensed at the local (city or county) level.
- Electrical Contractor Licenses: the State of Wyoming requires that all electrical contractors hold a current company license issued by the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety, which is to be renewed every year.
Note: Journeyman and Masters that hold a license in another state may have reciprocity in the state of Wyoming.
- The Journeyman Electrician License has reciprocity with: Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, and Utah
- Master Electrician License has reciprocity with: Idaho, South Dakota, and Utah
The State of Wyoming adopts the National Electrical Code without modification. The examination for licensing is based on the current edition of the National Electrical Code.

Exams are given for the following electricians licenses:
- Journeyman - must have proof of 4 years (8,000 hours) of work experience and an additional 144 hours per year (or 576 hours) of electrical classroom instruction over the course of four-year apprenticeship.
- A passing grade for this exam is 70 percent.

- Master electrician - proof of 8 years (16,000 hours) of work experience which should include 4 years (8,000 hours) as a licensed journeyman, and 576 hours of electrically-related classroom instruction.
- A passing grade for this examination is 75 percent.

- Low voltage technician and limited technician - you must present proof of 2 years (4,000 hours) of training, which must have been obtained through work relating to this category.
- Exam applications must be accompanied by notarized letters from past employers indicating the experience and type of work, as well as the number of hours of on-the-job training. Hands-on electrical experience may also be confirmed using the employment verification form provided.
- For electrical experience obtained in the military, include a copy of your DD-214 form with the exam application.
- Approved applicants will receive an approval letter detailing exam requirements.
- A passing grade for this examination is 70 percent.
- A Technician Acknowledgment of Responsibility form needs to be completed and signed by the full-time employed technician. The form must be notarized.

For contractors, the Master Acknowledgment of Responsibility form should be completed and the signature of the full time, actively-employed master electrician should be notarized and returned with the application.
How to fill out your application:
Application forms may be printed and filled out manually, or filled out electronically via Adobe Acrobat and printed out. After filling out the form, be sure to print, sign and send to the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety office by mail.
Licensing and Application Fees:
- Electrical contractor’s license or renewal is $400.00
- Low voltage or limited contractor’s license or renewal: $200.00
Note: The application must be accompanied by a company check, money order, or cashier’s check made payable to the State of Wyoming.

Applicants should verify their required bond amount with their city or the state prior to applying for a contractor license bond.
- Contractors in Gillette, Wyoming: $5,000 bond
- Contractors in Lander, Wyoming: $2,000 bond
- Contractors in Sheridan, Wyoming: $25,000 or $10,000 bond, depending on the work being performed
- Non-resident contractors (in the state for less than one year) must post a “Sales and Use Tax” bond with the Department of Workforce Services
- A minimum $20,000 Non-Resident Employer’s Surety Bond must be filed in all cases when anticipated monthly payroll is greater than $10,000.
- The amount of the bond may be greater than $20,000 depending upon the size of your payroll.
- The amount increases by $2,000 for each $10,000 (or portion thereof) in excess of $20,000.
- This bond must be kept in place for a period of at least two years and there is no maximum amount for the bond.
How Long Does the Licensing Process Take?
The Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety may take up to 30 days to process renewals and applications.
